This catalogue, one of several planned by the Bangladesh National Museum, contains a representative selection of Buddhist and Hindu Sculpture in the Bangladesh National Museum. Though the first Image acquired for the Museum in 1914, today the Department of History and Classical Art holds a substantial number of Sculptures. One hundred and eighty different objects from this collection have been included in this catalogue though a large portion of Vishnu images. This entire catalogue has been divided into two sections: Buddhist and Hindu Sculptures. Of these seven different deities of Buddhist with Vishnu and his incarnations, we have selected images to keep importance on its poses, postures and historical background. It has not been possible to date all the images accurately or provide the provenance of many. Nevertheless, we believe that this representative catalogue would be of help to iconography researchers and students as well as the general public. We hope, moreover, that it would encourage greater research in the area.
