From the Preface
In 1973 Karl Wutt visited the Kalasha in the eastern Hindu Kush for the first time. From the Chitral River it was a day’s journey on foot to the first Kalasha villages. The first drawings collected during this visit were made directly in Karl Wutt’s sketchbook. In the following visits he always had drawing books and pencils, which he acquired upon arrival from Peshawar and the Chitral bazaar.

The Kalasha drawings, which were prompted by Karl Wutt, are derived from carvings, petroglyphs and the soot paintings of the Kalasha clan houses. Throughout the years, more than 250 of these drawing books came together. Over 200 people consisting of men, women, and children of all ages have drawn in these large notebooks of approximately 25x30cm in size. For Karl Wutt, these drawings are their own kind of language: „They are not inferior to scripture and one experiences something different than oral communication.“ In this publication we present a selection of the unique drawings created between 1973 and 1997 and photos taken by Karl Wutt in these years.
