Tsaparang, the ancient capital of the kings of Guge, in western Tibet, remained a secret as its gates were closed to outsiders. It was one of the most important centres responsible for the revival of Buddhism after its persecution in India. The author, with his deep knowledge of the language and psychology and religious literature of the people of Tibet, was able to lift the veil imposed by the Lamas on this region; becoming one of the first to produce a chronicle of the archaeology and ancient history of Western Tibet. Every door opened to this remarkable scholar who succeeded in studying the area.
