Christoph von Fürer-Haimendorf was born in Austria and studied Anthropology at the universities of London and Vienna. His field research was in various parts of India, where he studies the Konyak Nagas and several tribes of Hyderabad State where, in the 1959s, he held the position of Advisor for Tribes and Backward Classes to the Nizam's government.
Subsequently, he concentrated on the study of the peoples of Nepal and particularly on those inhabiting the regions of high altitude such as Sherpas of Khumbu and the various communities in the border areas of Western Nepal such as the Bhotias of Dolpo and Mustang.
